How to position standmount speakers for the best sound in any room

Most people spend months choosing their standmount speakers and about four minutes deciding where to put them. I've seen this play out in listening rooms all over Melbourne — a gorgeous pair of speakers shoved against a bookshelf, or toed in so hard they're practically staring at each other, and the owner wondering why the sound feels closed-in and confused. The speakers aren't the problem. They never are.

Placement is the single highest-leverage adjustment available to a standmount owner. It costs nothing, it's fully reversible, and it routinely makes a bigger difference than swapping cables, upgrading a DAC, or even moving up a model tier. I'll admit I got evangelical about this early in my career and sometimes I still have to remind myself to dial it back when I'm in someone else's listening room. But the physics is the physics.

Why standmounts are uniquely sensitive to placement

Floorstanders have one major placement variable baked in: their proximity to the floor. That boundary interaction is fixed. Standmounts, by contrast, sit on stands that you choose, at a height you set, at a distance from the wall you control. Every one of those variables shapes the sound you hear.

The smaller cabinet also means less low-frequency extension. A typical two-way standmount rolls off somewhere between 45Hz and 70Hz, depending on the design. That means the bass you do get is easily disturbed by boundary reinforcement — specifically, the rear wall and side walls adding energy at certain frequencies and creating peaks that weren't in the recording. Getting the speaker away from walls isn't just about soundstage; it's about keeping the bass honest.

The KEF R3 Meta (check price) is a good example of a speaker that rewards careful placement generously. In our listening room it needed at least 600mm from the rear wall to stop the upper bass from congesting. Pull it out to 900mm and the midrange clarifies immediately — you hear it as a tonal shift, not just a staging change. The rear wall: start here, always

Measure from the back of the speaker cabinet (not the stand base, not the front baffle) to the rear wall. For most standmounts in an average Australian living room — say, a rectangular room between 15 and 35 square metres — you want that gap to be at least 500mm. Many speakers sound better at 800mm to 1.2 metres. Some, particularly rear-ported designs, actively need it.

Rear-ported standmounts present a specific challenge. The port is tuned to reinforce bass at a particular frequency, and if you push the speaker close to a wall, that port output reflects back and adds to the low-frequency buildup in the room. A few manufacturers — including KEF with the R3 Meta — offer foam port bungs precisely because they know their speakers will end up in rooms where placement freedom is limited. The bung essentially changes the tuning to suit a near-wall position. It costs a bit of low-end extension, but it trades that for cleaner, better-controlled bass. Front-ported and sealed designs have more flexibility. Sealed standmounts in particular — which roll off more gradually and don't have the port resonance to worry about — can sit considerably closer to the rear wall without the same penalty.

Side walls and the first reflection point

The rear wall gets most of the attention, but side walls cause their own problems. The first reflection point — where sound from the speaker bounces off the side wall and arrives at your ears a few milliseconds after the direct sound — smears stereo imaging and colours the midrange. You can find it simply: sit in your listening position, have someone hold a mirror flat against the side wall and slide it toward the speaker until you can see the tweeter in the reflection. That's the first reflection point.

If that point falls on a bare plaster wall, you have options. A panel of acoustic absorption there (even a well-placed bookshelf with irregular objects, honestly) helps. Alternatively, keeping the speakers well away from the side walls — more than 600mm, ideally more than 900mm — reduces the intensity of that reflection. The problem is that in a typical narrow Australian living room, that distance can be hard to achieve on both sides simultaneously. One speaker often ends up closer to a side wall than the other, and asymmetry is its own issue.

Symmetry about the centre axis of the room matters more than most people realise. If one speaker is 400mm from the side wall and the other is 900mm, the bass response and early reflections will be different at each speaker, and the stereo image will wander. Where you can't achieve symmetrical side-wall distances, identical treatment at each first reflection point — even if the distances differ — goes some way toward correcting it.

Toe-in: the most misunderstood adjustment

Toe-in is the angle at which the speakers point toward the listening position. There's a common belief that you should always toe-in until both tweeters aim directly at your ears. This is wrong for many speakers, and for standmounts in particular, the correct toe-in is deeply design-dependent.

Speakers with a narrow dispersion pattern — which includes most speakers with a dome tweeter crossed over above 2kHz — tend to beam at higher frequencies. If you toe them in fully, you get a very bright, forward presentation with a narrow sweet spot. Backing off the toe-in widens the sweet spot, softens the top-end energy, and often improves imaging width. The tradeoff is that you'll hear more of the room's side-wall reflections.

Speakers with wider, more controlled dispersion — coaxial designs like the LS50 Meta, or waveguide-loaded designs — are less sensitive to toe-in because the off-axis response is inherently better matched to the on-axis sound. You can toe them in more aggressively without the harshness penalty.

Start with about 10 to 15 degrees of toe-in and adjust by ear in small increments. The test I use: play a well-recorded vocal and listen for when the singer sits stably and centrally between the speakers without sounding like they're being spotlit. That's your starting point. Then fine-tune with something that has a wide stereo spread — a well-recorded acoustic ensemble or a jazz trio with good spatial information. The image should feel wide and stable, not artificially narrow.

Stand height: the overlooked variable

Stands that put the tweeter at seated ear height are the goal for almost every standmount. This sounds obvious, but it's frequently ignored. A speaker tilted downward because the stands are too tall — or upward because they're too short — changes which part of the speaker's vertical dispersion pattern hits your ears, and that changes the tonal balance.

Most standmount tweeters are designed to be heard on-axis or within a few degrees of it in the vertical plane. A standard seated ear height in Australia tends to fall around 90 to 100 centimetres from the floor, depending on your furniture. Stands in the 60 to 70cm range suit most compact standmounts with relatively low-set tweeters; taller stands in the 70 to 80cm range work for speakers where the tweeter sits higher on the baffle.

The Bowers & Wilkins 705 S3 (check price) is a case worth mentioning: the tweeter-on-top housing sits above the main cabinet, so the effective tweeter height is higher than you'd expect for a speaker of that size. The 705 S3 benefits from stands in the 50 to 60cm range for most rooms, which feels counterintuitive. Check the manual or the manufacturer's spec sheet — some include a recommended stand height and it's worth taking seriously.

The equilateral triangle and listening distance

Textbook setup advice says to form an equilateral triangle between the two speakers and the listening position — equal spacing all around. This is a reasonable starting point but it's not a rule. In a typical Australian living room where the sofa is already where it is and you can't move it three metres forward, the triangle is going to be isosceles at best.

What matters more than the exact geometry is the ratio between speaker spacing and listening distance. If your speakers are 1.8 metres apart and you sit 3.5 metres away, the stereo image will feel diffuse and unstated. If you're 1.5 metres from speakers spaced 1.8 metres apart, it'll feel like being inside the speakers rather than in front of them. A listening distance roughly 1.2 to 1.5 times the speaker spacing is a practical guideline. Adjust from there based on your room.

Worth noting: small standmounts often work better in a near-field setup than people expect. Pulling your chair forward, spacing the speakers around 1.2 to 1.5 metres apart, and listening from 1.5 to 1.8 metres away gives you a tighter stereo image and dramatically reduces the contribution of room reflections. When the room is the limiting factor

I've been in a beautiful apartment in Carlton where a pair of excellent standmounts was fighting a textbook room mode at around 55Hz. The owner had tried three different speaker positions and couldn't understand why the bass was bloated and one-note no matter what he did. The answer — which took about twenty minutes with a measurement mic and REW (Room EQ Wizard, free software, highly recommended) to confirm — was that the room's first-order length mode was sitting almost exactly at the port tuning frequency of the speakers. The reinforcement was structural, not fixable purely through placement.

In that situation, you have three options in rough order of effort: add bass absorption (corner traps are the most efficient way to do this), use the port bungs to change the speaker's low-frequency behaviour, or apply digital room correction via your amplifier or a miniDSP unit. Room correction is a tool, though, not a substitute for good placement. Get the placement as close to right as your room allows, then apply correction to handle what's left. Using it to compensate for poor placement is a bit like using noise-cancelling headphones to mask a squeaky chair — it works, but you haven't fixed the underlying problem.

A practical sequence for a new room

Start with the speakers at roughly one-third of the room length from the rear wall. Set the stand height so the tweeter aligns with seated ear height. Set toe-in to around 10 degrees. Sit in your listening position and play something you know very well — a recording with a strong centre image and deep bass you've heard on many systems.

Adjust rear-wall distance first, in 100mm increments, until the upper bass sounds most natural and least prominent. Then address toe-in: rotate both speakers equally until the centre image locks in cleanly. Then fine-tune stand height if it feels like the top end is too bright or too dull relative to what you'd expect from the speaker.

The whole process takes an hour if you do it properly. It sounds like a lot. But it's the kind of hour that changes how you hear the speakers, and honestly, once you've done it a few times in different rooms, you develop an instinct for where a given speaker wants to be.
